CHAPTER NINE

When I opened my vampire eyes, gazing up to look upon my beautiful mate, the expression of joy Emrys wore branded itself on my heart. He truly knew loneliness was a thing of his tortured past. In his smile I saw unclouded hope for our future together. Our first kiss as vampire mates tasted sweeter, felt warmer, and reached down into the depths of our combined souls. For that’s what we were now. Two souls joined within the matrimony of mateship. I wanted to remain in bed and make love to Emrys all over again. An impossible wish as it seemed nothing could calm Emrys’ excitement.

He dragged me from the bed, clutching my hand, pulling me toward a full length mirror. “Look, darling, look!” he gushed. “Look how beautiful you are! Strong and gorgeous!”

I stood in silence, staring at the handsome vampire staring back at me. Long, wavy, platinum blond hair hung around my shoulders. My eyes were pale green, my skin was like smooth porcelain, and my muscles were defined. After twenty eight years, this was where my life began. My human years were an apprenticeship for a vampire existence. Perhaps my dreadful marriage to Dean had been a test, too. A lesson learned in how ugly human relationships could turn, and also a preparation for knowing how to honour genuine love.

Emrys buzzed around me, a sparkling smile on his face. I wished we could have escaped from it all and disappeared together on a honeymoon. It would have been nice to spend my first days as a vampire with Emrys and no one, and nothing, else. That night couldn’t be spent making love and shutting the rest of the world out. My sense of duty as an Amara was of uppermost importance. I could take the pressure of that duty away from Emrys, but I couldn’t lose focus on it myself. Leo’s life hung on a thread, as did the lives of innocent others walking Nottingham’s streets.

I pulled on the first thing I grabbed from my suitcase: jeans and a long sleeved t-shirt. Emrys preened in front of the mirror, chatting non-stop. His joy bubbled over and was evident in everything he did.

“This one, darling?” Emrys left the dressing table and stood before me, holding a shirt against his chest. “Or the other one? Which one do you think is the nicest?”

“That one. I like the Asian silk. You could make a hessian bag look good, though.” I laced up my runners. “Jesus… what’s that horrible smell I keep getting a whiff of?”

“Dean. When he’s mad he emits an odour through his pores.”

I grimaced. The smell had an acrid, metallic tang to it and it settled in the back of my throat. It wasn’t overpowering, though it certainly made its unpleasant presence known.

“Speaking of Dean.” He was the last person I wanted to think about. “Under no circumstance can he know about the Silver Bullet theory.” I checked my watch and noted the time at eleven PM. Emrys watched me pace, eyes round and hands clasped together.
